Leeds are on the hunt for a new manager after caretaker boss Sam Allardyce ruled himself out of contention for the job.

The best betting sites had installed Big Sam as the favourite to become the club’s next permanent manager before today’s announcement.

Allardyce was handed the reins for the final four games of the campaign, but he was unable to save Leeds from relegation.

The former England boss has now decided against staying on as they prepare for life in the Championship next season.

“At this stage in my career I am not sure taking on this challenge, which is potentially a long-term project, is something I could commit to, but I wish the club every success for the future and hope the club returns to the Premier League, where they belong,” said Allardyce when announcing his decision.

The club said that “an announcement on a new Leeds United head coach will be made in the coming weeks”.

Leeds Manager For First Game Of The 2023/24 Season Odds

Steven Gerrard

Gerrard could be forced to step down to the Championship as he bids to rebuild his career following a disastrous spell at Aston Villa.

He was touted as a future Liverpool manager after leading Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title, and some saw Villa as a mere stepping-stone for the former Reds captain.

However, his spell at the Midlands club proved to be calamitous, and he was sacked in October after just 11 months in charge.

Villa’s upturn in form since Unai Emery replaced him in the dugout has further dented Gerrard’s reputation, so offers from Premier League clubs may not be forthcoming this summer.

The prospect of spearheading a long-term project at Leeds could appeal to Gerrard, and he is the 5/2 favourite to land the job.

Carlos Corberán

Corberán is one of the most highly-rated coaches in the Championship following his sterling work at Huddersfield.

He led the Terriers to a third-place finish in the 2021/22 campaign, but they ultimately lost to Nottingham Forest in the play-off final.

Corberán left for Olympiacos, but it did not work out, so he returned to the Championship to take over as West Brom boss in October last year.

He has a 51.5% win record with the Baggies, who narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs after finishing three points behind sixth-place Sunderland.

Corberán spent a few years learning his trade as Marcelo Bielsa’s assistant at Leeds, and he was heavily linked with a return to the club when they sacked Jesse Marsch in February.

However, he signed a contract extension with West Brom, which will keep him at the club until 2027, so it may be difficult for them to prise him away this summer, although he is the 3/1 second favourite with Bet365 to land the job

Brendan Rodgers

Rodgers is next in the odds at 5/1 with football betting sites to take over from Allardyce as Leeds manager.

However, it is difficult to imagine him managing the club now that they have been relegated to the Championship.

After all, he is still a highly-regarded coach, having won the FA Cup with Leicester and back-to-back trebles with Celtic.

Rodgers struggled at the Foxes during the 2022/23 campaign, but he can point to a lack of investment in the squad.

He is likely to hold on for a job in the Premier League, so there is a lot more value on offer elsewhere in this market.

Lee Bowyer

Bowyer spent seven years at Leeds as a player, and he may jump at the chance to return to the club as manager.

He does not have a great deal of experience – three years at Charlton and a single season with Birmingham – and that may count against him.

Yet Bowyer was tipped to replace Javi Gracia as Leeds manager before they turned to Allardyce, and he could be in contention this time around.

He is best priced at 10/1, whereas other betting firms will only offer 6/1 on him, suggesting that he is a serious candidate.

Régis Le Bris

The Lorient boss could prove to be an intriguing leftfield candidate in Leeds’ search for a new head coach to lead them back to the Premier League.

They are reportedly keeping tabs on him, but he is another highly inexperienced coach with no experience of English football.

He has just one year of management under his belt, having led Lorient to a mid-table finish this term, so it would be surprising if Leeds chose him as their next manager.
